01 · Altitude

Everything Seems Bigger Here

At an altitude of between 350 and 450 metres, the Fauzan vineyards overlook the contrasting expanse of the plain from their promontory. On clear winter days, when the air is crisp, the Pyrenees can be seen rising in the distance. Cliffs cut across the view, lending depth to the landscape.

This is the estate's highest vineyard site. The grapes ripen later here, and these vines are usually the last we harvest.

02 · Coolness

Wide Day-to-Night Temperature Swings

Altitude brings coolness. The greater differences between daytime and night-time temperatures here than in La Caunette or Graniès help the vines develop their aromas.

Winter cold is biting, accompanied by a constant flow of wind, particularly around our Syrah vines overlooking the Cesse gorges. The wind never truly lets up. It helps us maintain excellent vine health and tempers the intensity of the sun during the warmer months, allowing the vines to grow.

Stones at Fauzan
03 · Limestone

Beneath the Stones

As on the limestone plateaux of La Caunette and Graniès, the limestone here formed in an ancient lake. The soil is deeper, allowing vine roots to descend into dark earth rich in organic matter, sheltered beneath a bed of stones and ready to offer its abundance.

The weathered limestone is fissured deep down. Roots can establish themselves permanently in its smallest cracks to reach the water they will need in summer. A few Pinot Noir, Gamay and Mondeuse Noire vines grow here, far from their usual regions, finding an unexpected coolness.

The newest plots of Syrah, Marsanne, Grenache and Roussanne were planted on land that had lain fallow and had never been cultivated. The soil is rich; it has never received organic or mineral fertilisers, nor herbicides. Vines here have always been grown without insecticides, with only two annual treatments using sulphur, copper and herbal infusions.

This is an environment unspoilt by agricultural inputs, and we intend to keep it that way. We believe that the balance of the vine can sustain itself, and that this balance is found again in the wines, through precise acidity and fine, pure aromas.
